-Thoughts on Reading the Subtraction of Education
Ankang High-tech Zone Sidang Primary School Wang Zhe
Wang Zhe, a first-class teacher with a bachelor’s degree, has an educational motto of "opening children’s wisdom with talent, influencing their emotions with personality, and caring for their hearts with love". He has been rated as "excellent teacher" and "advanced individual in education and teaching" for many times since he taught for 17 years, and was selected as "teaching expert" by Hanbin District Education and Sports Bureau in 2016.
Before reading the book "Subtraction of Education", my understanding of education may be a little too simple and one-sided. Subconsciously, I think education should be additive. I want to teach students more knowledge in every class, and I can’t wait to teach them everything I know. However, this new book by Mr. Zhu Yongxin, with its unique perspective and in-depth thinking, completely subverts my understanding of education. It turns out that education is not just about instilling knowledge, but more importantly, it is about cultivating people’s independent thinking ability, shaping their personality and discovering their potential.
In Mr. Zhu Yongxin’s idea, "educational subtraction" is an important concept. This concept refers to that in the process of education, children can focus more on the most important things by subtracting those tedious and useless contents. This made me re-examine our current education methods. In the pursuit of achievement and efficiency, do we sometimes pay too much attention to instilling knowledge and ignore children’s personalities and interests?
The first point in the book is to emphasize that children need to learn autonomous learning. With the rapid development of modern society, knowledge is updated very quickly. Therefore, it is particularly important for children to have the ability of autonomous learning. Parents and teachers can stimulate children’s interest and motivation in learning by providing some learning resources and guidance, so that they can learn more independently and efficiently.
The second point is that education needs to pay attention to children’s personality and interests. This makes me think deeply. As parents and teachers, how should we understand each child’s hobbies and specialties and provide them with more personalized education services? Only by paying attention to each child’s personality development can we better help them develop their potential.
The last point is that subtraction education needs to get rid of those tedious and useless contents. In teaching, there are many contents that we think children need to master. These contents make our classroom seem to have many ideas, large capacity and depth, but it is tiring to teach. On the other hand, students learn the most, which will only waste their time and energy. Therefore, parents and teachers need to deeply understand their children’s needs, remove those unnecessary contents, and let their children learn something and pay more attention to the most important things.
In this era full of changes and challenges, Subtraction of Education provides us with a brand-new educational perspective. This book inspired me deeply, and it also made me reflect on my educational concept and professionalism more deeply. "Subtraction" means grasping and understanding students’ learning situation, and it also means respecting students. Doing "Subtraction of Education" well is the art and skill of education, and learning to do "Subtraction of Education" is the most beautiful practice to the bright side.
