Global MEMS Supply Chain and Internet of Things Summit was successfully held in Shanghai

The Global MEMS Supply Chain and Internet of Things Summit and the Global MEMS Industry Alliance MEMS Industry Group(MIG) Shanghai Summit were held in Shanghai on September 11th. The conference brought together the elites of the global MEMS industry, focused on the global MEMS supply chain and the Internet of Things industry, presented the latest international MEMS technology, and focused on the development trend of the Internet of Things industry in China. This is the first time that MIG, the global MEMS industry alliance, has come to Shanghai, China to hold the MIG Shanghai Summit with the theme of "MEMS Supply Chain and Internet of Things" together with Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology (SIMIT) and Shanghai Institute of Micro Technology Industry (SITRI) of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Speakers attending the summit included Huang He, senior director of SMIC’s technology research and development, Jérémie Bouchaud, director of MEMS and sensor business of IHS, Michael Young, director of Honeywell’s electronic sensing business, Zhao Yang, president of Meixin Semiconductor, and Thomas Gessner, director of Hof Institute of Electronic Nanosystems in Flawn. David Horsley, a professor at the University of California, Davis, co-director of Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center, Angelo Assimakopoulos, director of Lou’s e-commerce development, and Joseph Xie, CEO of Sirui Technology. Participants included nearly 200 experts from home and abroad, who came from various links in the MEMS sensor industry chain, such as chip design enterprises, wafer foundry manufacturers, packaging and testing manufacturers, equipment and materials manufacturers, terminal application manufacturers, research institutions and investment institutions.

Recently, the Outline for the Development and Promotion of National Integrated Circuit Industry issued by the State Council clearly pointed out that it will focus on building the integrated circuit industry chain and accelerate the research and development of core technologies in emerging fields such as MEMS and the Internet of Things, which undoubtedly injected a boost into the development of MEMS and the Internet of Things industry in China. The leaders attending the MIG Shanghai Summit, Gao Yun, Mayor of Jiading District, Shanghai, Gan Pin, Deputy Director of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, and Xu Xiaotian, Vice Chairman of China Semiconductor Association, all expressed the strong support of the state in emerging fields such as the Internet of Things.

As an important hardware foundation in the era of intelligent sensing, the demand for MEMS sensor products has increased rapidly in recent years. As the world’s largest electronic product production base, China consumes a quarter of the world’s MEMS devices, attracting global attention. Stephen Whalley, chief strategy officer of MIG, the global MEMS industry alliance, said that the ecological environment of China’s MEMS sensor industry is gradually improving, and it is developing rapidly.

China’s mobile phone production capacity ranks first in the world, and it is also a clear leader of the Internet of Things. The applications of smart mobile phones, automotive electronics and the Internet of Things in China are being widely popularized. Academician Damon, director of Shanghai Institute of Microsystems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized in his speech that when innovative enterprises are constantly emerging, the ecosystem in the field of MEMS sensor research and development is becoming more and more perfect, the main research and development centers of MEMS industry are concentrated in Shanghai and Jiangsu, and there are many MEMS enterprises in China, and the active competition is becoming more and more fierce. In the future, MEMS will play an increasingly important role in consumer electronics, automobile industry, industrial control, biomedicine, aerospace and other fields.

China, as a new battlefield of MEMS, has a strong market capability in two main application fields of MEMS, smart phones and tablet computers. Jérémie Bouchaud, director of MEMS and sensor business of IHS, a research institution, pointed out that the application fields of MEMS will gradually expand in the future, including emerging wearable devices, automotive electronics with more than 100 MEMS sensors, and smart families and smart cities closely related to people’s lives.

The whole world is concerned about the optimization and utilization of resources. Monitoring through MEMS sensors can optimize resources and improve efficiency. The MEMS sensor market mainly focuses on smart phones, automotive electronics, medical fields, wearable applications and urban construction.

Major enterprises at home and abroad will expand their investment in the research and development of MEMS sensors. Honeywell’s two MEMS production lines are in full swing; SMIC is gradually becoming a manufacturer in the field of MEMS sensors, expanding its business from CMOS to MEMS. Taking the three-axis accelerometer designed by Maxim Semiconductor as an example, this paper introduces the difficulties and major breakthroughs in sensor design at present.

In the whole semiconductor ecosystem, MEMS is playing an increasingly important role, and its application scope includes consumer electronics, automobile industry, industrial control, biomedicine, aerospace and other fields, and it is still expanding rapidly. MEMS will play a central role in the coming Internet of Things era, providing new technology products with smarter and sharper sensory capabilities. The MIG Shanghai Summit has representatives from leading institutions from all over the world and locally. Everyone gathered together to discuss the global MEMS supply chain and the Internet of Things industry, show the latest international MEMS technology, and discuss the development trend of the Internet of Things industry in China, which has gained wide influence in the industry.

On the occasion of the gathering of many industry leaders in Shanghai, the kick-off meeting of "Beyond Moore" industrial technology innovation alliance was held in the same period on September 12th. Under the guidance and care of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, the alliance was jointly established by Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Micro Technology Industry and other units and enterprises.

The launching ceremony of Beyond Moore Industrial Technology Innovation Alliance was supported by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and Jiading District Science and Technology Commission, and more than 60 core members and MIG members witnessed the unveiling ceremony of the alliance, which promoted the exchange and cooperation opportunities between alliance members and overseas experts.

In the information sharing session of "Beyond Moore" industry, Tigerson Yang, president of Shanghai Institute of Micro-technology Industry, introduced in detail the development opportunities of "Beyond Moore" industry in China and the necessity of innovation platform construction; Next, Cao Mingxia, Zhang Wenyan and Wang Xuhong shared the development of MEMS/ sensor industry in the world and China, the global sensor technology trend report, the construction and demand discussion of the "Beyond Moore" 8-inch R&D platform respectively.

In the discussion session of alliance tasks, Zhu Jiaqi, vice president of ITRI, introduced the short-term and medium-and long-term tasks of the alliance, hoping to implement all the work of the alliance in a pragmatic way. Members of the Alliance spoke in succession to put forward their ideas on alliance construction and their concerns about the "Beyond Moore" innovation platform.

The "Beyond Moore" industrial technology innovation alliance will focus on beyond Moore’s technology field, promote the development of core chip industry and promote the integration of diversified technologies, devote itself to integrating the vertical system and horizontal application resources of beyond Moore’s industry, accelerate the exchange of technology and market information, explore the development direction of beyond Moore’s industry, promote the formulation of industry standards, assist enterprises in planning development strategies, jointly promote the faster and better development of beyond Moore’s industry, and prepare for the coming era of perception and Internet of Things. At the same time, the "Beyond Moore" industrial technology innovation alliance will actively explore the international cooperation mode and jointly promote the global development of beyond Moore industry with MEMS sensors as the core.
